This month, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of children’s oral health. Did you know that tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases? However, it is completely preventable with daily brushing and flossing and regular visits to the dentist. Many children do not visit their dentist until they are already experiencing pain, so regular visits are important to help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.

In addition to maintaining good at-home oral care practices, it is important to take your child to the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings every six months to maintain their beautiful smiles. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child should first see the dentist by their first birthday. This may seem early, but starting a regular checkup routine at a young age will help to ensure a healthy mouth throughout their life!

At the dental appointment, our dentist in New Caney will perform a comprehensive oral examination to check for any signs of decay or other issues that may affect your child’s health. During this time, they will also clean your child’s teeth and polish them to remove plaque buildup from the surface of each tooth. Scheduling regular dental appointments is key to preventing future issues with your child’s teeth.

In addition to visiting the dentist regularly, it is also important that parents set a good example by practicing good oral hygiene themselves. By setting a good example for your child, you will be showing them how to take care of their teeth every day. This includes brushing at least twice a day for two minutes at a time with fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once per day, and avoiding sugary foods and beverages to prevent cavities. With proper care of your teeth at home, you can rest assured that your child is on their way to a lifetime of perfect smiles!

How To Prepare Children for Dental Visit?

Your children will probably experience some anxiety about going to the dentist, but they’ll also see how excited you are about it! If you tell your children that you’re going because they need to get their teeth checked out and cleaned, they’re more likely to have a positive attitude about the visit too. Talking to your child ahead of time about any fears they may have can also help a lot. Show them that you believe in your smile by brushing your teeth together the night before or the morning of the appointment. That will help show them that dental appointments are normal. Young kids sometimes need a little more help getting comfortable with trips to the dentist.
