While brushing and flossing at home is incredibly important, it isn’t enough to completely clean your children’s teeth. Food and bacteria can build up along the gum line, and can only be removed through professional cleanings.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental cleaning appointment around age one. It is important to bring your child in before that age, however, so the dentist can assess their oral health.
Dental cleanings, or dental prophylaxis, are used to prevent or treat gum disease. It is important because plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis or inflammation of the gums.
Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can be treated and reversed in its early stages. However, if gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. This advanced form of gum disease cannot be reversed and can lead to serious health complications.
During a dental cleaning, the hygienist will:
- Take x-rays to check for cavities and other diseases
- Remove plaque, tartar buildup, and stains
- Polish the teeth for a clean, healthy shine
- Apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen tooth enamel
Your dentist may recommend a dental cleaning for your child every six months. However, the dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings if plaque buildup is severe or if your child experiences signs of dental disease.
Although parents may be tempted to delay a dental cleaning until their child’s next visit to the dentist, dental cleanings are necessary to maintain oral health. A delayed dental cleaning session can lead to cavities, gum disease and can also lead to dental complications like tooth loss. It can affect the overall dental health of the child.
